Use of Cocoa Pods Husks (Theobroma cacao L.) as a Potential Substrate for the Production of Lactic Acid by Submerged Fermentation Using Lactobacillus Fermentum ATCC 9338
AbstractDue to growing environmental concerns, climate change, and the scarcity of natural resources, there have been recent efforts to produce chemicals from lignocellulose. The objective of this study was to valorize cocoa pods husks into lactic acid. Delignification of the raw substrate was carried out with potassium hydroxide, with a biomass/solvent ratio of 9.14% and a temperature of 128 °C, giving a maximum delignification of 93.87%. The acid hydrolysate obtained in 26.95 min of autoclave, with a biomass/solvent ratio of 9.53% (m/v) and a concentration of 4.92% (m/v) of H2SO4 after detox...

Investigating Zimbabwean mathematics teachers' dispositions on the 'O' level calculator syllabus 4028
The questionnaire responses of 38 secondary school mathematics teachers provided initial data for this study. About 26.3% (n=10) of this number was sampled for classroom observation and in-depth interviews in order to assess the consistency of the dispositions. Only 15.8% of the schools in the study adopted the calculator version of the 'O' Level curriculum, 4028. The teachers' dispositions showed competence to use scientific calculators during instruction but maintained teacher-centred instructional approaches in both classrooms where students possess calculators and logarithms. This finding...

Distribution and Health Risk Assessment of Trace Metals in Surface Waters and Groundwater Around Artisanal Gold Mining Areas in Central-western Côte d’Ivoire, West Africa
The present study aimed to evaluate Ni, Cr, Zn, Cd, Hg, and Pb distribution and the health risks in surface waters and groundwater around artisanal mining areas in the central-western Côte d'Ivoire. Trace metals spatial distributions were assessed using ArGIS method. Waters pollution status were ascertained through water pollution indices. Human health risk was investigated using non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks indices. In surface waters, the same distribution trends were observed for Ni and Cd, and, for Hg and Pb. While, the distribution patterns of Zn and Cr differed from those of Ni...

Study of the Thermodynamic Quantities of Adsorption and Activation of Piroxicam in Copper Corrosion in a Nitric Acid Environment
The objective of this work is to assess the inhibitory efficacy of the piroxicam molecule on copper corrosion in a 1M nitric acid medium using the mass loss technique (gravimetry). The inhibition efficiency, represented as IE (%), increases with higher concentrations and temperatures. Various adsorption isotherm models (Langmuir, El-Awady, Freundlich, and Temkin) were employed to describe the interactions between the molecule and metallic copper. The Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm, along with the Adejo-Ekwenchi isotherm, was utilized to identify the types of adsorption. Additionally, the thermo...

Characterization of Plantain Peels Activated Carbon Supported with Iron Nanoparticles after Adsorption of Hydrogen Sulfide from Biogas
AbstractIn this research, the characteristics of Musa paradisiaca (MP) iron-functionalysed activated carbon (AC) after adsorption of H2S from biogas were demonstrated. The AC was chemically impregnated with potassium hydroxide (KOH) and then carbonised at a temperature of 500 °C for 3 h for activation. The activated carbon was then functionalized with iron oxide (Fe2O3) and labelled BANK-Fe. The Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) adsorption test was performed on a fixed bed column. The biogas flow rate was 1 L∙min−1 with 25% water (w/w) added. This test resulted in an adsorption capacity of 9.86 mgH2S∙g−1...

Adsorption of Hydrogen Sulfide onto Activated Carbon Fibers: Effect of Pore Structure and Surface Chemistry
To understand the nature of H2S adsorption onto carbon surfaces under dry and anoxic conditions, the effects of carbon pore structure and surface chemistry were studied using activated carbon fibers (ACFs) with different pore structures and surface areas. Surface pretreatments, including oxidation and heat treatment, were conducted before adsorption/desorption tests in a fixed-bed reactor. Raw ACFs with higher surface area showed greater adsorption and retention of sulfur, and heat treatment further enhanced adsorption and retention of sulfur. The retained amount of hydrogen sulfide correlated...

Study of Adsorption of Hydrogen Sulfide in Biogas with Musa Paradisicaca Activated Carbon using Full Factorial Design
In this study, the simultaneous influence of different factors such as biogas flow
rate, water content and iron oxide on H2S adsorption from biogas with activated carbon
(AC) developed from Musa Paradisiaca (MP) peels was demonstrated using full factorial
design method. AC was activated at 500°C for 3 hours after basic impregnation with
potassium hydroxide. The values of the studied parameters ranged from 0 to 25% and 1 to
3 L.min-1 for water content and flow rate, respectively. The AC was functionalized or not
with iron oxide (Fe2O3). Responses studied in the adsorption tests were...
