Date publication: 2024-09-24
Journal: International Association of Online Engineering (IAOE)
In the context of adopting the competency-based approach (CBA) as a new teaching methodology in sub-Saharan countries, and particularly in Côte d’Ivoire, the development of learning content that is aligned with the economic, socio-cultural, and scientific needs of society is of paramount importance. Educational experts have therefore proposed competencies and associated tasks for educational programs. However, these learning contents often face issues of task redundancy. The present paper aims to address this problem by proposing a hybrid approach to educational item clustering, combining weig...

Hybrid composites based on polyethylene and coir/oil palm fibers
Auteurs: Charles Amani Kakou, Hamid Essabir, Mohammed Ouadi Bensalah, Rachid Bouhfid, Denis Rodrigue, Abou el kacem Qaiss
Date publication: 2015-07-19
Journal: SAGE Publications
In this work, hybrid composites were produced by blending oil palm fibers with coir fibers and high-density polyethylene for fixed fiber content (40 wt%). The composites were manufactured by twin-screw extrusion followed by compression molding. In particular, the effect of coupling agent (maleated polyethylene) concentration (0, 2, and 4 wt%) was investigated. From the composites obtained, the morphological, structural, and thermal properties were evaluated via scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transformed-infrared spectrometry, and thermogravimetric analysis. The effect of fiber ratio and...

Hybrid Acyclic and Spillback-Aware Scheduling Protocol for Intelligent Traffic Lights Control
Auteurs: Gokou Hervé Fabrice Diédié, Nogbou Georges Anoh, Souleymane Oumtanaga
Date publication: 2023-02-13
Journal: Springer Science and Business Media LLC
AbstractTraffic jam is a major issue in modern cities. By increasing delay and pollution, road congestions restrict mobility and are proving to be a menace to public health. Particularly, at closely spaced intersections they are reflected in queue spillbacks between upstream and downstream lanes. In this paper, we address their mitigation as a variation of the well-known capacitated facility location problem. We suggest an integer programming formulation along with a delay-and-queue-based traffic lights control heuristic. Unlike solutions commonly found in the literature, the proposed protocol...

Abstract While many molecular studies have documented arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) communities in temperate ecosystems, very few studies exist in which molecular techniques have been used to study tropical AMF communities. Understanding the composition of AMF communities in tropical areas gains special relevance as crop productivity in typically low fertility tropical soils can be improved with the use of AMF. We used a hierarchical sampling approach in which we sampled soil from cocoa ( Theobroma cacao L.) plantations nested in localities, and in which localities were nested within each...

Date publication: 2024-01-01
Journal: Scientific Research Publishing, Inc.
In this work, lateral deformation of human eosinophil cell during the lateral indentation by an optically trapped microbead of diameter 4.5 µm is studied. The images were captured using a CCD camera and the Boltzmann statistics method was used for force calibration. Using the Hertz model, we calculated and compared the elastic moduli resulting from the lateral force, showing that the differences are important and the force should be considered. Besides the lateral component, the setup also allows us to examine the lateral cell-bead interaction. The mean values of the properties obtained, in pa...

Hybrid model of diffusion based on the Jeffreys‐type equation for noise reduction on images
Auteurs: Georges Laussane Loum, Ghislain Koffi Pandry, Armand Kodjo Atiampo, Souleymane Oumtanaga
Date publication: 2017-12-21
Journal: Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET)
Hybrid methods filtering of images generally put in collaboration two filters: the first is used for the pre‐smoothing and the second to finalise the filtering operation. This approach permits to smoothen the image efficiently while preserving at best its contours and fine structures. Unfortunately, the pre‐smoothing generally induces a blur which is not taken into account during the smoothing. In this study, the authors propose a hybrid diffusion method based on the Jeffreys‐type equation (JTE). The method proposed provides two steps: a pre‐smoothing stage called adaptive‐linear diffusion (A‐...

Heterotis niloticus is an African species of Osteoglossiformes that presents biological peculiarities and zootechnical performances favorable for fish farming. However, the absence of a sexual dimorphism hinders the optimization of its reproduction in captivity and limits the understanding of its reproductive behavior. This study is aimed at developing a minimally invasive and reliable sexing method to detect vitellogenin (Vtg) in female plasma. A commercial sexing kit (Acobium, Montpellier, France) for Arapaima gigas—a phylogenetically sister species of H. niloticus—successfully identified on...

Habitats of three marine fish species of major interest ( Epinephelus aeneus , Pseudotolithus senegalensis , and Pagellus bellottii ) at both juvenile and adult life stages were identified and mapped in the western part of the Gulf of Guinea. Habitat suitability models (HSMs) were designed to quantify species- and stage-specific fish densities from scientific survey data collected for the last 40 years according to two environmental descriptors (bathymetry, distance to river mouth) and accounting for temporal contrasts. Delta general linear models were selected to fit with the 0-inflated distr...

Impact of fermentation and incorporation of cashew flour on the micronutrient and macronutrient contents of millet flour sold on the market: Case of the city of Yamoussoukro
Auteurs: Traoré Sékou, David Akaki, KY Koné, D Soro
Date publication: 2022-05-13
Journal: African Journal of Food, Agriculture, Nutrition and Development
The weaning period of an infant, which should begin from 7 months, is characterized by the gradual change from a liquid to a solid diet. After 6 months, the nutrients contained in breast milk are no longer sufficient to meet the growing demands of the infant. This is the ideal period for the introduction of a complementary food to make up for any deficiencies. To contribute to this situation, two groups, each consisting of five combinations of millet flour, enriched with cashew flour were formulated. The samples M100A0 (Unenriched millet flour), M92,5A7,5, M85A15, M77, 5A22,5 and M70A30 were e...

Abstract Maize, the staple food of many populations, is suffering major losses due to Spodoptera frugiperda. Chemical pesticides were being over-used to control this pest. But to preserve the ecosystem, it’s important to test products with a low ecological impact. Study aims to evaluate the impact of hydroalcoholic extracts of three tropical woods Badi (Nauclea diderrichii), Bete (Mansonia altissima) Iroko (Milicia excelsa) on the larvae of S. frugiperda, the main pest of maize. Different parameters be evaluate: larval mortality rate, LD50, pupation duration, rate of leaves consumed by the lar...

Impact of local overheating on conventional and hybrid insulations for power transformers
Auteurs: K. S. Kassi, I. Fofana, F. Meghnefi, Z. Yeo
Date publication: 2015-10-01
Journal: Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)
For more than a century, conventional mineral oil/cellulose insulation is being used as main insulation for power transformers. The life span of these major assets is determined amongst others by the insulation system's mechanical resistance to withstand short circuit current forces. Since cellulose paper aging is accelerated by temperature, moisture and oxygen, poly-aramid-based synthetic insulation paper, with better thermal stability emerged for application in transformers. However the relatively limited number of studies on hybrid insulation and the cost of aramid paper still limit their u...

Impact of reduced rates of tiafenacil at vegetative growth stages on rice growth and yield
Auteurs: Donnie K. Miller, Jason A. Bond, Thomas R. Butts, L. Connor Webster, Koffi Badou‐Jeremie Kouame
Date publication: 2024-06-03
Journal: Cambridge University Press (CUP)
Abstract Tiafenacil is a new non-selective protoporphyrinogen IX oxidase (PPO)-inhibiting herbicide with both grass and broadleaf activity labeled for preplant application to corn, cotton, soybean, and wheat. Early season rice emergence and growth often coincide in the mid-southern U.S. with preplant herbicide application in cotton and soybean, thereby increasing the opportunity for off-target herbicide movement from adjacent fields. Field studies were conducted to identify any deleterious impacts of reduced rates of tiafenacil (12.5 to 0.4% of the lowest labeled application rate of 24.64 g ai...
